Jak’s World Mindfulness Session

15 December 2025 was the first time I attended Jak’s World meditation activity, mindfulness. I am an international student who studies at the University of Manchester, and it was not until early December that I noticed Jak’s World announcement on our campus website page. Jak’s World’s themes, namely psychological therapy, interpersonal communication, and even suicide prevention, really fascinate me, so I decided to have a go at it.

Mindfulness, briefly, is to sit in a circle and ease your body and mind to perceive the peacefulness and the feeling of your body. The meditation can be divided into three phases. In the first phase, we are supposed to share our feelings about what we did during the day. For me, that Monday was not an energetic day. It was raining constantly, and I felt a bit gloomy and unmotivated when it rained. Worse still, I was working on my final essays, but I found that with such misty weather, the harder I tried to work, the lower my working efficiency was. Hence, the progress did not go as I expected.

The second phase was the highlight of the activity. I started to meditate by lying on the chair and emptying my mind. It was quite a long process I got to say, I almost fell asleep. During those 45 minutes, my mind flew; I recalled and reflected on the things I did, most of which were about my assignments or exams. However, I felt much calmer than I used to be, without too much anxiety or emotional fluctuations, and this brought me the peacefulness to face adversities in life.

What is worth mentioning is that in the third phase, when we were asked about what scenes we envisaged in the meditation, a participant shared a worrying picture in his mind, nuclear wars, which was completely different from others’ happy worlds, but it was welcomed to be shared. As the participant argued, we have to be honest and authentic to ourselves under no circumstances. His words were provoking, as people in my country tend to cater to the general voice unintentionally, failing to listen and face their hearts, no matter good or bad. If we are intimidated to speak out the true thoughts we have, how could we relax, and most importantly, truly enjoy the peacefulness inside ourselves?

Eventually, mindfulness is a worthwhile activity in Jak’s World, especially to people like me, who are too rushed to leave some time for themselves. You will not find problems disappear magically after the meditation, but you will find yourself becoming more peaceful, calm, and better prepared for solving the problems you have.
