Mindfulness Breathwork

Jak’s World Mindfulness Breathwork

On the evening of 26 January 2026 at 7pm, we held another mindfulness session as part of Jak’s World’s Hopeful Horizons – Winter Edition, this time focusing on the pace of breathing. The session took place at Salford Lads Club and was attended by nine participants, along with a trained breathwork facilitator who guided us throughout the evening.

Each participant was provided with a mat, and scarves were used to help everyone stay warm and comfortable. I would especially like to mention the kindness shown by our facilitator, a lovely lady who generously shared her own scarf so that we could all stay cosy. From the very beginning, the room was filled with warmth, care, and a strong sense of togetherness.

As the session began, gentle background music played while the facilitator guided us through rhythmic breathing exercises. Each instruction focused on deep inhalations and slow, controlled exhalations. I tried my best to follow the breathing pace, but after a few minutes my eyelids grew heavy — and I fell asleep.

When I woke up, the session was nearly finished. During the sharing circle, I realised I wasn’t alone in my experience. Several participants mentioned that they found it challenging to maintain the breathing rhythm. One senior participant shared that changing long-established breathing habits takes time and practice, and that this particular pace felt unfamiliar at first.

At the end, I mentioned to one of the ladies that I had fallen asleep during the session. Instead of checking whether I had followed every instruction, she asked something far more important: did I feel more relaxed afterwards?

As the facilitator reminded us, the heart of mindfulness is being honest with your body. If resting or drifting into sleep helps the body reset and restore, that experience is just as valid. We don’t need to force ourselves into a single “right” method — listening to our body’s needs is what truly matters.
